This piece was painted on location at the waterfront park in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, during the 2011 Door County Plein Air Festival's sunset paintout. Last year, I made the mistake of "chasing" the sunset, changing my painting as the sunset progressed. This year, I loved this point of the sunset, before the sun dropped behind the bluff. I committed to it and left it alone once I had the sky done. The first thing I painted was the dock and the sailboats. There were a lot of people walking on the boats and I suspected they were perhaps getting ready to go out for a sunset sail. Sure enough, no sooner had I finished those masts and boats, did one of them go out to sail!
