This piece was painted "en plein air" (outdoors on location) outside of Wickenburg, Arizona. I had never seen a Joshua tree before...they are simply beautiful, rising about the desert floor like dark, silent guardians. They seem to be part cactus, part tree and, unlike species of deciduous trees that can be recognized by their leaves and their shapes, the Joshua trees were all similar but entirely different shapes.
